RESUMO

The encapsulation of active components is currently used as common methodology for the insertion of additional functions like self-healing properties on a polymeric matrix. Among the different approaches, polyurea microcapsules are used in different applications. The design of polyurea microcapsules (MCs) containing active diisocyanate compounds, namely isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) or hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), is explored in the present work. The polyurea shell of MCs is formed through the interfacial polymerization of oil-in-water emulsions between the highly active methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and diethylenetriamine (DETA), while the cores of MCs contain, apart from IPDI or HDI, a liquid Novolac resin. The hydroxyl functionalities of the resin were either unprotected (Novolac resin), partially protected (Benzyl Novolac resin) or fully protected (Acetyl Novolac resin). It has been found that the formation of MCs is controlled by the MDI/DETA ratio, while the shape and size of MCs depends on the homogenization rate applied for emulsification. The encapsulated active compound, as determined through the titration of isocyanate (NCO) groups, was found to decrease with the hydroxyl functionality content of the Novolac resin used, indicating a reaction between NCO and the hydroxyl groups. Through the thorough investigation of the organic phase, the rapid reaction (within a few minutes) of MDI with the unprotected Novolac resin was revealed, while a gradual decrease in the NCO groups (within two months) has been observed through the evolution of the Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier-Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and titration, due to the reaction of these groups with the hydroxyl functionalities of unprotected and partially protected Novolac resin. Over longer times (above two months), the reaction of the remaining NCO groups with humidity was evidenced, especially when the fully protected Acetyl Novolac resin was used. HDI was found to be more susceptible to reactions, as compared with IPDI.

RESUMO

The development of polymeric materials as antifouling coatings for aquaculture nets is elaborated in the present work. In this context, cross-linked polymeric systems based on quaternary ammonium compounds (immobilized or releasable) prepared under mild aqueous conditions were introduced as a more environmentally friendly methodology for coating nets on a large scale. To optimize the duration of action of the coatings, a multilayer coating method was applied by combining the antimicrobial organo-soluble copolymer poly(cetyltrimethylammonium 4-styrenesulfonate-co-glycidyl methacrylate) [P(SSAmC16-co-GMA20)] as the first layer with either the water-soluble copolymer poly(vinylbenzyl trimethylammonium chloride-co-acrylic acid) [P(VBCTMAM-co-AA20)] or the water-soluble polymers poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(hexamethylene guanidine), PHMG, as the second layer. The above-mentioned approach, followed by thermal cross-linking of the polymeric coatings, resulted in stable materials with controlled release of the biocidal species. The coated nets were studied in terms of their antifouling efficiency under accelerated biofouling conditions as well as under real conditions in an aquaculture field. Resistance to biofouling after three water-nutrient replenishments was observed under laboratory accelerated biofouling conditions. In addition, at the end of the field test (day 23) the uncoated nets were completely covered by marine contaminants, while the coated nets remained intact over most of their extent.

RESUMO

Rapid industrialization has led to huge amounts of organic pollutants and toxic heavy metals into aquatic environment. Among the different strategies explored, adsorption remains until the most convenient process for water remediation. In the present work, novel cross-linked chitosan-based membranes were elaborated as potential adsorbents of Cu2+ ions, using as cross-linking agent a random water-soluble copolymer P(DMAM-co-GMA) of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAM). Cross-linked polymeric membranes were prepared through casting aqueous solutions of mixtures of P(DMAM-co-GMA) and chitosan hydrochloride, followed by thermal treatment at 120 °C. After deprotonation, the membranes were further explored as potential adsorbents of Cu2+ ions from aqueous CuSO4 solution. The successful complexation of copper ions with unprotonated chitosan was verified visually through the color change of the membranes and quantified through UV-vis spectroscopy. Cross-linked membranes based on unprotonated chitosan adsorb Cu2+ ions efficiently and decrease the concentration of Cu2+ ions in water to a few ppm. In addition, they can act as simple visual sensors for the detection of Cu2+ ions at low concentrations (~0.2 mM). The adsorption kinetics were well-described by a pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion model, while the adsorption isotherms followed the Langmuir model, revealing maximum adsorption capacities in the range of 66-130 mg/g. Finally, it was shown that the membranes can be effectively regenerated using aqueous H2SO4 solution and reused.

RESUMO

The design of self-healing agents is a topic of important scientific interest for the development of high-performance materials for coating applications. Herein, two series of copolymers of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) with either the hydrophilic N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAM) or the epoxy group-bearing hydrophobic glycidyl methacrylate were synthesized and studied as potential self-healing agents of waterborne polyurethanes (WPU). The molar percentage of DMAM or GMA units in the P(HEMA-co-DMAMy) and P(HEMA-co-GMAy) copolymers varies from 0% up to 80%. WPU/polymer composites with a 10% w/w or 20% w/w copolymer content were prepared with the facile method of solution mixing. Thanks to the presence of P(HEMA-co-DMAMy) copolymers, WPU/P(HEMA-co-DMAMy) composite films exhibited surface hydrophilicity (water contact angle studies), and tendency for water uptake (water sorption kinetics studies). In contrast, the surfaces of the WPU/P(HEMA-co-GMAy) composites were less hydrophilic compared with the WPU/P(HEMA-co-DMAMy) ones. The room-temperature, water-mediated self-healing ability of these composites was investigated through addition of water drops on the damaged area. Both copolymer series exhibited healing abilities, with the hydrophilic P(HEMA-co-DMAMy) copolymers being more promising. This green healing procedure, in combination with the simple film fabrication process and simple healing triggering, makes these materials attractive for practical applications.

RESUMO

Air pollution by pathogens has posed serious concern on global health during the last decades, especially since the breakout of the last pandemic. Therefore, advanced high-efficiency techniques for air purification are highly on demand. However, in air-filtering devices, the prevention of secondary pollution that may occur on the filters remains a challenge. Toward this goal, in the present work, we demonstrate a facile and eco-friendly process for the biocidal treatment of commercial high-efficiency particulate air filters. The antibacterial filters were successfully prepared through spray coating of aqueous solutions based on biocidal water-soluble polymers, poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate-co-cetyl trimethylammonium 4-styrene sulfonate-co-glycidyl methacrylate) [P(SSNa24-co-SSAmC1656-co-GMA20)] and poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl)methacrylate. Significantly, an optimized green route was developed for the synthesis of the used polymers in aqueous conditions and their stabilization through cross-linking reaction, leading to biocidal air filters with long-lasting activity. The developed coatings presented strong and rapid antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (in 5 min) and Escherichia coli (in 15 min). Moreover, the cytotoxicity test of the polymeric materials toward Α549 lung adenocarcinoma cells indicated very low toxicity as they did not affect either the cell growth or cell morphology. The above-mentioned results together with the scalable and easy-to-produce green methodology suggest that these materials can be promising candidates as filter coatings for use on air-purification devices.

RESUMO

Self-healing materials and self-healing mechanisms are two topics that have attracted huge scientific interest in recent decades. Macromolecular chemistry can provide appropriately tailored functional polymers with desired healing properties. Herein, we report the incorporation of glycidyl methacrylate-based (GMA) copolymers in waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) and the study of their potential healing ability. Two types of copolymers were synthesized, namely the hydrophobic P(BA-co-GMAy) copolymers of GMA with n-butyl acrylate (BA) and the amphiphilic copolymers P(PEGMA-co-GMAy) of GMA with a poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) macromonomer. We demonstrate that the blending of these types of copolymers with two WPUs leads to homogenous composites. While the addition of P(BA-co-GMAy) in the WPUs leads to amorphous materials, the addition of P(PEGMA-co-GMAy) copolymers leads to hybrid composite systems varying from amorphous to semi-crystalline, depending on copolymer or blend composition. The healing efficiency of these copolymers was explored upon application of two external triggers (addition of water or heating). Promising healing results were exhibited by the final composites when water was used as a healing trigger.

RESUMO

The synthesis and characterization of water-soluble copolymers containing N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAM) and a vinylic monomer containing an Iridium(III), Ir(III), complex substituted with the quinoline-based unit 2-(pyridin-2-ylo)-6-styrene-4-phenylquinoline (VQPy) as ligand are reported. These copolymers were prepared through pre- or post-polymerization complexation of Ir(III) with the VQPy units. The first methodology led to copolymer P1 having fully complexed VQPy units, whereas the latter methodology allowed the preparation of terpolymers containing free and Ir(III)-complexed VQPy units (copolymer P2). The optical properties of the copolymers were studied in detail through UV-Vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy in aqueous solution. It is shown that the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (ΜLCT) emission is prevailing in the case of P1, regardless of pH. In contrast, in the case of terpolymer P2 the MLCT emission of the Ir(III) complex is combined with the pH-responsive emission of free VQPy units, leading to characteristic pH-responsive color changes under UV illumination in the acidic pH region.

RESUMO

One of the concerns today's societies face is the development of resistant pathogenic microorganisms. The need to tackle this problem has driven the development of innovative antimicrobial materials capable of killing or inhibiting the growth of microorganisms. The present study investigates the dependence of the antimicrobial activity and solubility properties on the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity ratio of antimicrobial coatings based on quaternary ammonium compounds. In this line, suitable hydrophilic and hydrophobic structural units were selected for synthesizing the antimicrobial copolymers poly(4-vinylbenzyl dimethyldodecylammonium chloride-co-acrylic acid), P(VBCDDA-co-AA20) and poly(dodecyltrimethylammonium 4-styrene sulfonate-co-glycidyl methacrylate), P(SSAmC12-co-GMA20), bearing an alkyl chain of 12 carbons either through covalent bonding or through electrostatic interaction. The cross-linking reaction of the carboxylic group of acrylic acid (AA) with the epoxide group of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) of these two series of reactive antimicrobial copolymers was explored in blends, obtained through solution casting after curing at various temperatures. The release of the final products in pure water and NaCl 1 M solutions (as analyzed by gravimetry and total organic carbon, TOC/total nitrogen, TN analyses), could be controlled by the coating composition. The cross-linked polymeric membranes of composition 60/40 w/w % ratios led to 97.8 and 99.7% mortality for Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), respectively, whereas the coating 20/80 w/w % resulted in 96.6 and 99.8% cell reduction. Despite the decrease in hydrophobicity (from a 16- to a 12-carbon alkyl chain), the new materials maintained the killing efficacy, while at the same time resulting in increased release to the aqueous solution.

RESUMO

Advances in 3D bioprinting have allowed the use of stem cells along with biomaterials and growth factors toward novel tissue engineering approaches. However, the cost of these systems along with their consumables is currently extremely high, limiting their applicability. To address this, we converted a 3D printer into an open source 3D bioprinter and produced a customized bioink based on accessible alginate/gelatin precursors, leading to a cost-effective solution. The bioprinter's resolution, including line width, spreading ratio and extrusion uniformity measurements, along with the rheological properties of the bioinks were analyzed, revealing high bioprinting accuracy within the printability window. Following the bioprinting process, cell survival and proliferation were validated on HeLa Kyoto and HEK293T cell lines. In addition, we isolated and 3D bioprinted postnatal neural stem cell progenitors derived from the mouse subventricular zone as well as mesenchymal stem cells derived from mouse bone marrow. Our results suggest that our low-cost 3D bioprinter can support cell proliferation and differentiation of two different types of primary stem cell populations, indicating that it can be used as a reliable tool for developing efficient research models for stem cell research and tissue engineering.

RESUMO

Adequately designed multiresponsive water-soluble graft copolymers were used to serve as a multifunctional polymeric platform for the encapsulation and transfer in aqueous media of hydrophobic magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). The backbone of the graft copolymers was composed of hydrophilic sodium methacrylate units, hydrophobic dodecyl methacrylate units, and luminescent quinoline-based units, while either the homopolymer poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) or a poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide-co-N-isopropylacrylamide) copolymer was used as thermosensitive pendent side chains. The polymeric platform forms micellar-type assemblies in aqueous solution, and exhibits pH-responsive luminescent properties and a lower critical solution temperature behavior in water. Depending on the design of the side chains, the cloud point temperatures were determined at 38 and 42 °C, close or slightly above body temperature (37 °C). Above the critical micelle concentration (CMC), both graft copolymers can effectively stabilize in aqueous media as magnetic colloidal superparticles (MSPs), oleylamine-coated MnFe2O4 MNPs, as well as 1:1 mixture of oleylamine-coated MnFe2O4 and CoFe2O4 MNPs. When CoFe2O4 particles were mixed with MnFeO4 in equal amounts, the specific loss power increased significantly, while an opposite trend was observed in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, probably due to the anisotropy of cobalt. As a consequence, fine-tuning of the chemical structure of the copolymers and the composition of the MSPs can lead to materials that are able to act simultaneously as luminescent, hyperthermia, and contrast MRI agents.

RESUMO

In the present work, reactive blending of copolymers with complementary functional groups was applied to control their antimicrobial activity and antifouling action in real conditions. For this purpose, two series of copolymers, poly(4-vinylbenzyl chloride-co-acrylic acid), P(VBC-co-AAx), and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate-co-glycidyl methacrylate), P(SSNa-co-GMAx), were synthesized via free radical copolymerization and further modified by the incorporation of biocidal units either covalently (4-vinyl benzyl dimethylhexadecylammonium chloride, VBCHAM) or electrostatically bound (cetyltrimethylammonium 4-styrenesulfonate, SSAmC16). The cross-linking reaction of the carboxylic group of acrylic acid (AA) with the epoxide group of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) of these two series of reactive antimicrobial copolymers was explored in blends obtained through solution casting after curing at various temperatures. The combined results from the ATR-FTIR characterization of the membranes, solubility tests, turbidimetry, and TEM suggest that the reaction occurs already at 80 °C, leading mostly to graft samples, while at higher curing temperatures (120 or 150 °C) insoluble cross-linked samples are usually obtained. Controlled release experiments of selected membranes were performed in pure water and aqueous 1 M NaCl solutions for a period of two months. The released material was followed through gravimetry and TOC/TN measurements, while the evolution of the integrity and the morphology of the membranes were followed visually and through SEM, respectively. Antimicrobial tests also revealed that the cross-linked membranes presented strong antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa. Finally, a specific blend combination was applied on aquaculture nets and cured at 80 °C. The modified nets, emerged in the sea for 15 and 35 days, exhibited high antifouling action as compared to blank nets.

RESUMO

In the present work a detailed study of new bacteriostatic copolymers with quaternized ammonium groups introduced in the polymer chain through covalent attachment or electrostatic interaction, was performed. Different copolymers have been considered since beside the active species, the hydrophobic/hydrophilic nature of the co-monomer was also evaluated in the case of covalently attached bacteriostatic groups, aiming at achieving permanent antibacterial activity. Homopolymers with quaternized ammonium/phosphonium groups were also tested for comparison reasons. The antimicrobial activity of the synthesized polymers after 3 and 24 h of exposure at 4 and 22 °C was investigated on cultures of Gram-negative (P. aeruginosa, E. coli) and Gram-positive (S. aureus, E. faecalis) bacteria. It was found that the combination of the hydrophilic monomer acrylic acid (AA), at low contents, with the covalently attached bacteriostatic group vinyl benzyl dimethylhexadecylammonium chloride (VBCHAM) in the copolymer P(AA-co-VBCHAM88), resulted in a high bacteriostatic activity against P. aeruginosa and E. faecalis (6 log reduction in certain cases). Moreover, the combination of covalently attached VBCHAM units with electrostatically bound cetyltrimethylammonium 4-styrene sulfonate (SSAmC16) units in the P(SSAmC16-co-VBCHAMx) copolymers led to efficient antimicrobial materials, especially against Gram-positive bacteria, where a log reduction between 4.9 and 6.2 was verified. These materials remain remarkably efficient even when they are incorporated in polysulfone membranes.

RESUMO

The ability to encapsulate hydrophobic ferrites in colloidal superparticle structures of an a-telechelic hexadecyl-functionalized poly(methacrylic acid) (C16H33-PMAA) polymer with a linear architecture was investigated and compared with that of two amphiphilic comb-type water-soluble copolymers, namely, P(ANa-co-DAAm) and P(MANa-co-DMA), which are comprised of a poly(sodium acrylate) or poly(sodium methacrylate) backbone and pendent dodecyl acrylamide or dodecyl methacrylate chains, respectively. In the case of C16H33-PMAA, the pH-sensitive self-assembly behavior, which was studied through Nile Red probing and TEM, was related to its encapsulation properties. Hydrophobic MFe2O4 nanoparticles coated with oleylamine (MFe2O4@OAm MNPs, where M = Co, Mn, Ni) with a similar shape and size (∼9 nm) and magnetization values of 87.4, 63.1 and 55.0 emu g(-1) for CoFe2O4@OAm, MnFe2O4@OAm and NiFe2O4@OAm, respectively, were successfully encapsulated into the hydrophobic cores of spherical micellar structures formed by the copolymers in an aqueous solution through a solvent mixing procedure. The synthesized magnetic colloidal superparticles fell in the static dephasing regime (SDR). NMR relaxivity measurements of MFe2O4@P(ANa-co-DAAm), MFe2O4@P(MANa-co-DMA) and MFe2O4@C16H33-PMAA at pH = 4.5 and pH = 7 (where M = Co, Mn, Ni) at 11.7 T were recorded and the transverse relaxivity (r2) (mM(-1) s(-1)) was determined. Among all, the CoFe2O4@polymers demonstrated the highest r2 relaxivity values, ranging from 61.6 for CoFe2O4@C16H33-PMAA (pH = 7) to 316.0 mM(-1) s(-1) for CoFe2O4@P(ANa-co-DAAm). The relaxation efficiency (r1 and r2) of CoFe2O4@P(ANa-co-DAAm) was investigated further by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 1.5 T and 3 T and the r2/r1 ratios were found to be 16.5 and 18.2, respectively, indicating its potential use as a T2 contrast agent.

RESUMO

The behavior in aqueous solution of the doubly-grafted anionic polyelectrolyte poly(sodium 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonate-co-sodium acrylate-)-g-poly(N-isopropylacry-lamide)-g-poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide), P(AMPSNa-co-ANa)-g-PNIPAM-g-PDMAM, was compared to that of the single-grafted anionic polyelectrolyte poly(sodium 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonate-co-sodium acrylate)-g-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), P(AMPSNa-co-ANa)-g-PNIPAM. The investigation through turbidimetry, pyrene fluorescence probing, viscometry and dynamic light scattering revealed that the existence of the hydrophilic poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide), PDMAM, side chains in the doubly-grafted copolymer P(AMPSNa-co-ANa)-g-PNIPAM-g-PDMAM did not perturb the thermoresponsiveness of the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), PNIPAM, side chains, but favoured the stabilization in water of the core-corona nanoparticles, formed upon heating the aqueous solution above the Lower Critical Solution Temperature (LCST) of PNIPAM chains. In a similar manner, the complexes formed between the cationic surfactant N,N,N,N-dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride, DTAC, and the oppositely charged backbone of the doubly-grafted copolymer P(AMPSNa-co-ANa)-g-PNIPAM-g-PDMAM were stabilized in water by the PDMAM side chains. Thus, phase separation was prevented upon heating the aqueous solution above LCST. Moreover, the (1)H NMR study revealed that the fraction of PNIPAM chains forming solid-like aggregates at high temperature increased substantially in the presence of DTAC, as a consequence of the net charge decrease of the backbone due to the polymer/DTAC complexation.

RESUMO

Hydrophobically modified water-soluble polymers (HMWSPs), comprised of a poly(sodium methacrylate) (PMANa) or poly(sodium acrylate) (PANa) backbone and pendent dodecyl methacrylate (DMA) or dodecyl acrylamide (DAAm) chains, respectively, were synthesized. The hydrophobic content of the copolymers, P(MANa-co-DMA) and P(ANa-co-DAAm), is in the range of 0 to 25 mol%, while their weight-average molar mass varies from ~10 000 up to ~75 000. Their self-assembly behavior in dilute aqueous solution was followed through Nile Red probing, DLS and TEM measurements. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) is mainly controlled by the hydrophobic content and not the molar mass of the copolymers. Above CMC, spherical and large-compound micelles are identified by DLS and TEM. Moreover, oleylamine coated CoFe2O4 nanoparticles (CoFe2O4@OAm MNPs) of 9.4 nm with a saturation magnetization Ms = 85 emu g(-1) were solvothermally prepared. The hydrophobic CoFe2O4@OAm MNPs were successfully encapsulated into the hydrophobic cores of the structures formed by the copolymers above CMC through a solvent mixing procedure, and in that way hydrophilic CoFe2O4@HMWSP nanohybrids resulted. For comparison purposes, two alternate phase transfer approaches were also used to convert CoFe2O4@OAm MNPs to hydrophilic ones: (a) addition of a coating layer by cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and (b) by the ligand exchange procedure with 2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA). NMR transverse relaxivity measurements of the aqueous suspensions of CoFe2O4@P(ANa-co-DAAm), CoFe2O4@CTAB and CoFe2O4@DMSA were recorded and the r2 relaxivity was determined. CoFe2O4@CTAB demonstrated the highest r2 relaxivity of 554.0 mM(-1) s(-1), while CoFe2O4@P(ANa-co-DAAm) and CoFe2O4@DMSA showed lower values of 313.6 mM(-1) s(-1) and 76.3 mM(-1) s(-1), respectively.

RESUMO

The geometric isomeric diversity of a centrosymmetrically disubstituted naphthalene derivative with flexible methoxytriethyleneglycol chains has been investigated both in the liquid and the solid state. Owing to the fact that the exocyclic C(Aryl)-O linking appears to be essentially a double bond, the material can exist in discrete geometric isomers. Variable temperature ultraviolet absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy combined with single crystal X-ray diffraction reveal the nature of the various stereoisomers present in the liquid and solid phase. Computational support is also given wherever possible. In solution, the material exists predominantly as a mixture of two rapidly interconverting stereoisomers; namely, the thermodynamically preferred cis, cis and the energetically closest lying cis, trans configuration. In the solid state, optical spectroscopic methods provide evidence for the presence of a small amount of the energetically highly unstable trans, trans stereoisomer, kinetically trapped in the lattice defined by the scaffold of the predominant cis, cis isomeric form. Unlocking of the seemingly frozen cis, cis right arrow over left arrow trans, trans equilibrium was observed in the molten state.

RESUMO

The preparation of temperature-sensitive water-soluble hybrid organic/inorganic nanoparticles, exploiting the complexation of Cu2+ ions with PANa-g-PNIPAMx comb-type copolymers, is presented. These copolymers consist of a Cu2+-complexing poly(sodium acrylate) backbone, PANa, and thermosensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), PNIPAM, side chains. UV-vis spectrophotometry verified that the polymer/Cu2+ complexation follows a charge neutralization process, while turbidimetry revealed that the complexes formed can indeed be stabilized in water, provided that copolymers with a sufficiently high PNIPAM content (x approximately 80 mol % in monomer units) are used. Dilute solution viscometry and dynamic light scattering indicated that the hydrodynamic dimensions of the hybrid polymer/Cu2+ nanoparticles decrease substantially upon heating, reflecting the lower critical solution temperature behavior of the PNIPAM side chains. However, when the net negative charge of the hybrid polymer/Cu2+ nanoparticles decreases, interparticle aggregation and, eventually, phase separation may take place. In semidilute aqueous solution, the complexation of the polymer backbone with Cu2+ ions effectively controls the thermothickening properties of the thermosensitive comb-type PANa-g-PNIPAM copolymers. Finally, the temperature-induced formation of a compartmentalized hydrophilic-hydrophobic nanocontainer, where the hydrophilic and the hydrophobic compartments can be loaded with Cu2+ ions and hydrophobic substances, respectively, was evidenced through pyrene fluorescence probing.

RESUMO

The synthesis of a random copolymer through free radical copolymerization of a properly vinyl monofunctionalized regioregular poly(3-octylthiophene) (rrP3OT) macromonomer and N,N'-dimethylacrylamide (DMAM) is presented. The optical properties of the copolymer in water and in several organic solvents of varying polarity, as well as in THF/water and THF/methanol mixtures, were explored using UV-vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy. It is demonstrated that the rrP3OT chains adopt a coil conformation in solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THF) and chloroform with the appearance of the absorption and emission maxima at 439 and 565 nm, respectively. On the contrary, the rrP3OT chains are organized on a single chain packing form (intrachain interactions) in polar solvents such as ethanol and methanol, as it is verified with the observation of the characteristic three vibronic features of the absorption spectra of the copolymer with maxima at 513, 550, and 603 nm and emission maxima at 560 nm. However, when water is used as solvent, the rrP3OT chains self-assemble into a stacklike structure due to the increased interchain interactions, as confirmed by the different aggregation process of the rrP3OT chains in the THF/water mixture, the broader absorption spectrum in water compared to those recorded in ethanol and methanol, and the 80 nm red-shifted emission maximum, centered at 640 nm.

RESUMO

Comb-type copolymers of poly(acrylic acid) grafted with poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid) (PAMPSA) side chains form with poly(ethylene glycol), at low pH, water-soluble hydrogen-bonding interpolymer complexes. Turbidimetry, viscometry, and dynamic light scattering measurements suggest that compact, negatively charged, colloidal nanoparticles are formed at pH<3.75. The influence of the structure of the graft copolymers and of the ionic strength of the solution on the size of these nanoparticles was investigated. It was found that their hydrodynamic radius decreases by increasing the molecular mass of the PAMPSA side chains of the graft copolymer and increases with increasing the ionic strength of the solution.

RESUMO

The interaction between bovine serum albumin (BSA) and the anionic graft copolymers poly(sodium acrylate-co-sodium 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonate)-graft-poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (P(NaA-co-NaAMPS)-g-PDMAMx) was investigated within the acid pH region, 2 < or = pH < or = 7. The weight percentage, x, of the poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMAM) side chains varied from 0 up to 75% (w:w). When BSA and P(NaA-co-NaAMPS)-g-PDMAMx are oppositely charged, i.e., when pH is lower than the isoelectric point of BSA, the two macromolecules associate through Coulombic attractions. When the anionic graft copolymer is rich enough to the nonionic PDMAM side chains, x > or = 50% w:w, the associative phase separation is practically prevented, as revealed by the turbidimetric study of the BSA/P(NaA-co-NaAMPS)-g-PDMAMx mixtures in aqueous solution vs pH. In addition, the viscosity measurements support the formation through a charge neutralization process of a rather compact protein-polyelectrolyte complex stabilized by the hydrophilic PDMAM side chains grafted onto the anionic copolymer backbone.
